How Shockwave Therapy Works
Shockwave therapy delivers controlled acoustic energy into an injured or persistently painful area. These mechanical impulses create a localized biological response within the treated tissue.
The goal is not simply to mask pain. Shockwave therapy is used to stimulate the processes involved in tissue remodeling, circulation, and repair, particularly in chronic tendon and soft-tissue conditions that have not fully resolved.
What Shockwave Therapy Is Designed to Do
- Stimulate tissue remodeling
- Promote local circulation
- Encourage a healing response in chronically irritated tissue
- Reduce pain and improve function over time
- Target specific areas without injections or surgery

A short evaluation will tell you whether shockwave therapy is a good fit.
Adding Class IV Laser Therapy
Class IV laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of therapeutic light that are absorbed by cells in the treated area. This process, called photobiomodulation, is used to support cellular activity and tissue recovery.
Shockwave provides a mechanical stimulus, while laser works through light energy. Because they act through different mechanisms, laser can be added to your shockwave sessions when it’s clinically appropriate. Dr. Kovacs will tell you whether it makes sense for your condition.
What Class IV Laser Therapy Is Designed to Do
- Deliver therapeutic light energy into the treatment area
- Support cellular metabolism and activity
- Promote local circulation
- Help regulate inflammatory processes
- Support tissue repair and recovery

Frequently Asked Questions
Shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic energy delivered into a specific area of injured or persistently painful tissue. The mechanical stimulus is intended to promote biological responses associated with tissue remodeling, circulation, and recovery.
It’s most commonly used for persistent tendon and muscle conditions, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis and golfer’s elbow, rotator cuff pain, frozen shoulder, hip tendinopathy, and myofascial trigger points.
Not every type of pain is appropriate for shockwave therapy, which is why treatment begins with an individual evaluation.
No. Shockwave therapy doesn’t require you to receive chiropractic care or physical therapy at our office. Many people have already tried other treatments, and others come to us specifically for shockwave therapy. We evaluate each patient individually.
Laser therapy works through light energy rather than mechanical energy, supporting cellular activity and tissue recovery. It can be added to shockwave sessions when it’s clinically appropriate, and Dr. Kovacs will tell you whether it makes sense for your case.
Most people feel some pressure or discomfort during treatment, especially over a sensitive area. Intensity is adjusted to your tolerance, the session is brief, and most people resume normal activities afterward.
It depends on the condition, how long you’ve had it, and how you respond. Shockwave therapy is typically given as a series of sessions, and your recommended plan will be discussed after your evaluation.
No. Your history, symptoms, examination findings, and any contraindications are reviewed before treatment is recommended. If shockwave therapy isn’t appropriate for your condition, we’ll tell you.
Coverage varies, and many health plans don’t cover shockwave therapy. If your pain is related to a car accident, your New Jersey auto insurance (PIP) may apply. We’ll go over costs and your options before you start treatment.

★★★★★
In 1995 I injured my shoulder skiing. The next 30 years has been on and off pain of varying degrees, with no solid solution. I’ve done lots of conservative care, including PT, Acupuncture etc. I wanted to avoid surgery if possible. I saw Dr. Kovacs who started me on a regimen of shockwave therapy. I can happily say that since starting, this is the longest I’ve been pain free. My motion is better, and I don’t wake up after rolling on that shoulder. Highly recommend.
